Life sentence for former Party official

A FORMER Party official in Dongguan in south China’s Guangdong Province has been sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes and owning property he should not have been able to afford.

Wu Zhanhui, former deputy general secretary of the Party’s Dongguan city committee, took bribes totaling 49.7 million yuan (US$8.1 million) and owned a huge amount of property, Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court heard.

Wu, then deputy chief of the city’s environment protection bureau, granted Lai Hongzhong, head of Hengtai Co Ltd, favors in a bid for an industrial waste disposal project in 2003. In 2006, now bureau chief, he helped Lai extend his contract.

The court found that Wu accepted 49.7 million yuan in cash from Lai from 2003 to 2012.

He purchased property in Hong Kong worth HK$92 million (US$11.8 million) and loaned 30 million yuan back to Lai in 2007.

The value of the property was much higher than his legitimate earnings, the court said. Wu had used his power to seek benefits for others and illegally took money from others, it added.

In addition to life imprisonment. Wu was deprived of political rights for life while 5 million yuan of his property was confiscated.
