Life sentence for former patient who killed doctor

A MAN who bludgeoned a doctor to death after a nose operation left him in pain was sentenced to life imprisonment in Qiqihar, a city in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, yesterday.

In January last year, Qi Hongsheng, then a high school student, was operated on by Sun Dongtao to repair a deviated septum, Qiqihar Intermediate People’s court heard.

The following month, Qi sought out the doctor at Beigang Hospital’s ear, nose and throat department and attacked him with an iron pipe, news website www.dbw.cn reported. Sun died after emergency treatment while Qi was caught at the scene.

The court said it took into account Qi’s age when passing sentence. He was not yet 18 at the time of the offense.

It ruled that his personal assets be seized and given to Sun’s family as compensation and his parents were ordered to pay them 412,337 yuan (US$64,700).

Sun’s family has lodged an appeal over the compensation amount, the website reported.

The court heard that possible side effects of Qi’s operation included chronic fatigue and pain.

Li Yonghui, who underwent similar surgery in 2010, told the Beijing Evening News: “I feel pain every time I breath. I feel my spirit has left me. It’s better to die than stay alive.”

Another patient with the same problem was Lian Enqing, who stabbed a doctor to death at a hospital in east China’s Zhejiang Province on October 2013. He was sentenced to death in January 2014 and executed in May.

In an interview with China Central Television, Lian said: “Every time I breath, I feel pain in my head, chest and throat. I have to place the cap of a ballpoint pen in my nose to relieve my pain and have sleep.”
