Life sentence upheld for corrupt advisor

ZHEJIANG Higher People's Court has upheld the life sentence for a former senior provincial political advisor for power abuse and bribery in an appeal hearing.

It also upheld the confiscation of Dai Beijun's entire personal wealth and deprived him of all political rights for life, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Dai, former provincial environmental bureau chief. was sentenced to life on January 22 by Hangzhou No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

He was convicted of taking 4 million yuan (US$585,823) in bribes from more than 20 people and abusing power from 1996 to 2008 during his tenure as the provincial environmental bureau chief. He had his son-in-law to accept another 200,000 yuan in bribes, the court found.

He ordered all industrial polluters to use pollutant discharge monitoring devices produced by a company reportedly controlled by his mistress Zhang Yan.

Dai admitted the charges, but complained the life sentence was too severe and appealed to the higher court.

He argued he should get lighter punishment because he had disclosed criminal acts by other people.

His lawyer said Dai's abuse of power didn't result in major economic losses for the state and therefore the case should not constitute a criminal charge.
