Life sentence upheld for former top judge
A HIGHER People's Court in north China Hebei Province yesterday upheld the life sentence for the country's former top judge for bribery and graft of 3.9 million yuan (US$574,000).
The Hebei Province Higher People's Court handed down the sentence to Huang Songyou, former vice president of the Supreme People's Court. Huang was the highest ranking court official ever toppled for corruption charges in the country since 1949 when New China was founded. This is the trial of last resort for Huang and he cannot appeal.
Huang, 53, was convicted of abusing his post by taking more than 3.9 million yuan in bribes from 2005 to 2008, the Intermediate People's Court of Langfang City in Hebei Province ruled in January.
Huang's lawyer Gao Zicheng refused to comment on the sentence when he was leaving the court after hearing the sentence. Gao said Huang did not say anything upon hearing the sentence. The court also ordered Huang's personal property confiscated and his political rights revoked for life.
Police warded off the area around the court as early as 8:20am. Other cases in the court were suspended, because all judges were working on Huang's case, reported Beijing-based Legal Mirror.
Huang was removed from his post in October. He was also found guilty of embezzling, with others, 3.08 million yuan in 1997 when he was president of Zhanjiang Intermediate People's Court in Guangdong Province.
The country's disciplinary authority said Huang led a lavish and decadent life. He was reportedly a "sex-hungry judge" who had a special interest in underage girls.
The country's chief justice, Wang Shengjun, said during this year's legislative meeting that courts at all levels should "learn a lesson from the case of Huang Songyou."
