Life term for man who put poison in frozen dumplings
A MAN who injected poison into frozen dumplings that made four Chinese and nine Japanese citizens ill in 2007 and 2008 was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Chinese court yesterday.
Lu Yueting was guilty of adding dangerous substances to food, which resulted in one person becoming seriously ill and left 12 others with minor illnesses, prosecutors said.
His actions also caused significant financial losses, the People’s Procuratorate of Shijiazhuang City said.
The verdict was announced by the northern city’s Intermediate People’s Court at 9am yesterday at a public hearing attended by journalists and officials from the Japanese embassy in Beijing.
Lu, 39, a native of Jingxing County in north China’s Hebei Province, worked at the Tianyang Food Plant based in Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, from 1993 to 2009.
He was dissatisfied with his salary and attempted to create an incident to attract the attention of managers in order to boost his salary, according to the court.
Between July and August 2007, Lu entered the plant’s refrigeration storehouse and attempted to inject insecticide into the dumplings with syringes, but failed.
He re-entered the refrigeration storehouse three times between October and December 2007 and injected insecticide into six to nine boxes of frozen dumplings.
The contaminated dumplings were sold in Japan and the Hebei city of Chengde.
Four Chinese citizens in Chengde fell ill after eating the dumplings.
In January 2008, Japanese media reported that consumers there had fallen ill after they had eaten frozen meat dumplings produced by the plant.
The Tianyang Food Plant recalled its products and suspended production after the incident, resulting in losses of more than 5.5 million yuan (US$909,000).
Tests showed that the remaining dumplings from the same batch sent to Japan and other batches produced by the company at the time were safe, according to Chinese quality inspectors.
The plant was investigated by both Chinese and Japanese authorities shortly after the incident, but no problems were found.
In March 2010, Lu was detained by Chinese police.
The Shijiazhuang Intermediate People’s Court held a trial on July 30, 2013, at which time Lu confessed to the crime, saying he felt sorry for the sickened people and had not expected that his actions would have such serious consequences.
