Life upheld for 'decadent' judge

A HIGHER court in north China's Hebei Province today upheld the life sentence on the country's former top judge for bribery and graft.

Hebei Province Higher People's Court confirmed the sentence for Huang Songyou, former vice president of China's Supreme People's Court. Huang is the highest-ranking legal official toppled for corruption.

There is no further appeal. Huang, 53, was convicted of taking more than 3.9 million yuan (US$574,000) in bribes from 2005 to 2008, the Intermediate People's Court of Langfang City in Hebei ruled in January.

Huang's lawyer Gao Zicheng refused to comment on the sentence. The court also confiscated Huang's personal property and revoked his political rights for life, reported Legal Mirror today.

Huang was removed from his post last October. He was also found guilty of embezzling, with others, 3.08 million yuan in 1997 when he was president of Zhanjiang Intermediate People's Court in south China's Guangdong Province. He took 1.2 million yuan from in bribes.

The country's disciplinary authority said Huang led a lavish and decadent life. He was labeled a "sex-hungry judge" who had a special interest in underage girls.

The Supreme People's Court has launched an educational campaign among judges with Huang's case as a "negative example," Xinhua news agency reported.
