Lightning kills couple on wall
A PAIR of newlyweds, both 27 years old, were hit by lightning and died on a section of the Great Wall on Saturday, the Beijing Youth Daily reported yesterday.
The man, surnamed Wei, worked for the State Intellectual Property Office and the woman, surnamed Chen, was a PhD candidate at the prestigious Peking University.
Phone calls to the local police bureau yesterday went unanswered.
A witness surnamed Ji was quoted by the Beijing Times as saying the two newlyweds, together with three other tourists, were climbing toward the peak of the Jiankou part of the Great Wall during a heavy thunderstorm.
The two fell off a section of the wall that was 50 meters high when they were struck by lightning, Ji said. They had already stopped breathing when rescuers arrived about two hours later.
The other three tourists, all colleagues of Wei, were slightly injured and have been taken back to Beijing.
This part of the Great Wall, in the Huairou District in suburban Beijing, is known for being rugged and unreconstructed.
The "Wild Great Wall," a nickname for sections of the Great Wall that are not renovated, have become increasingly popular among adventurous tourists.
