Linguist's ex-staff deny theft claims
TWO former employees of Ji Xianlin, a late linguist once acclaimed as a "national treasure," yesteday pleaded not guilty to stealing antiques and books worth more than 3 million yuan (US$462,110) from Ji's former residence, during a trial in Beijing.
Wang Ru, who took charge of Ji's media affairs and claimed to be a foster daughter of Ji's former secretary Li Yujie, refused to be dressed in prison attire and shouted that the theft allegation had stained her reputation, Legal Evening News reported yesterday.
The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court was told that Wang, 49, allegedly hired the other suspect Fang Xianru, Ji's former butler, to break into Ji's former dwelling on the campus of Peking University and steal items, worth 3.33 million yuan, on December 15, 2009.
Wang denied the charges, claiming that she was merely transferring the relics, books and drawings to safety after Fang told her that Ji's residence was being "ransacked." Fang insisted that he was just following Wang's orders.
Ji Cheng, Ji's son, said he won't sue the duo for compensation as police had recovered all the stolen items.
The theft occurred five months after Ji died of a heart attack at the age of 98.
