‘Lion King’ director considers Monkey King a breakthrough of Chinese animation
Rob Minkoff, director of "The Lion King", described the new Chinese cartoon version of the Monkey King as a breakthrough in technique and style for China's animators.
At a conference in Beijing, the Oscar-winning director said, "I have noticed Chinese animation improving steadily in terms of techniques, technology, and the craft of animation over the past few years."
Mentioning "Monkey King: Hero is Back" a 3D animated adaption of the classical epic "A Journey to the West," Phelps said, "though I have not watched the whole film yet, I have seen several clips of it which look quite innovative."
The Monkey King has broken China's box office record for animation , making over 900 million yuan (about 141 million U.S. dollars) since opening in July.
Also attending the conference, the film's producer Lu Wei said that to appeal to young audience, the movie used new story-telling skills, such as special effects, to tell an old story.
Lu also attributed the film's success to its innovative methods of fundraising. Producers raised more than 7 million yuan through online crowd-funding, which not only helped fund the film, but worked as free advertising.
Lu also noted that compared to Hollywood, China's film industry lagged behind in several aspects including content, marketing and financing.
Talking about the success of Hollywood, Phelps stressed the cultural dimension, "different cultures and countries in the world have their inherent interests. What makes America unique is that America is a nation made of all the nations in the world, so it's natural for Americans to tell a story that is appealing to the world."
The Chinese culture is unique and specific, and Chinese film producers should explore ways to better interpret their local culture for a global audience, he suggested.
