Lion Rock brings heavy rainfall to SE China

TROPICAL storm Lion Rock continued to bring widespread rain today to southeast China, as its was downgraded to a tropical low pressure front in Guangdong Province after a fierce landing in Fujian Province yesterday.

Lion Rock brought heavy rains up to 308.5 millimeters in the central part of Guangdong in the 24 hours till 8am today, said Liang Jian, chief weatherman of the provincial meteorological station.

He said the station had issued a warning that rainfall could reach up to 100 millimeters over a three-hour period and the rain was expected to continue till Sunday.

The alert means rains up to 100 millimeters in the next three hours.

Lion Rock-triggered rains have also hit east China's Jiangxi and Anhui provinces, as the local weather departments issued rain alerts.

Authorities in Xunwu County in Jiangxi have evacuated 120 residents from hilly areas prone to landslides.

The power supply to 150,000 households in Zhangzhou City, Fujian, resumed today, after the weather caused a blackout in the city early yesterday.

About 162,200 people in Fujian Province had been evacuated to safe places before the storm came. No casualties have been reported.
