Li’s Russia visit to boost cooperation
CHINESE Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Moscow yesterday afternoon for an official visit to Russia, with a series of deals ranging from energy to people-to-people exchanges expected to be signed.
He enjoyed a warm welcome at a ceremony to mark his arrival.
Li said the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia had entered a new stage of development.
“With my visit, I am looking forward to further deepening the traditional friendship between China and Russia, and expanding our pragmatic cooperation, so as to achieve greater advancement in the development of bilateral ties,” Li said.
Besides meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow, Li will also meet his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev and attend a forum on innovations during his three-day visit.
The two sides are expected to sign about 50 mutually beneficial agreements and reach new consensus in the areas of energy, high-speed rail and finance.
“I am convinced that the Chinese premier’s visit will allow us to make substantial progress in key areas of practical cooperation,” said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.
China is seeking to diversify its sources of energy amid booming domestic consumption, while Russia is seeking to tap fast-developing Asian markets.
After a decade of negotiations, China and Russia signed a 30-year, US$400 billion agreement in May that will eventually involve 38 billion cubic meters of gas a year.
Analysts believe Li’s visit, his first to Russia since he took office in March last year, will inject new impetus into the two countries’ practical cooperation and their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Trade between China and Russia reached US$89.2 billion last year and plans are in place to raise that to US$100 billion by 2015 and US$200 billion by 2020.
Before Russia, Li visited Germany, the first leg on a three-nation tour which will also take him to Italy.
