Liu Xiang urges insurance for sport coaches
SHANGHAI'S Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang leaves for Beijing today to attend the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and will submit his first proposal since he was elected to the CPPCC national committee in 2008.
Liu is expected to call for "an effective insurance system for the coaches of athletic sports" during the 10-day conference from Wednesday to next Saturday, according to the Shanghai committee of CPPCC.
But Liu will leave before the conference ends to compete in the men's 60-meter hurdles in the Doha 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championship next Friday. Liu will also maintain his training regime in Beijing, according to his coach Sun Haiping.
However, his schedule has attracted criticism for leaving Liu too busy to fully take part in the CPPCC committee. "Even if there was no competition, I'm afraid Liu wouldn't have enough time for the conference," said Li Xianlun on the Website of China Radio International.
"The CPPCC committee is not a hall of fame … but on the contrary will lose credibility because the celebrities are often absent and don't have political strength," said Li.
