Liu鈥檚 dad confirms marriage hurdle cleared

CHINA’S star hurdler Liu Xiang married Beijing actress Ge Tian in Shanghai during the Mid-Autumn Festival, his father confirmed yesterday.

Liu Xuegen told reporters that his son and daughter-in-law had already registered their marriage after earlier putting them off the scent by saying it would be happening yesterday. A dozen or so reporters had waited outside Putuo District’s civil affairs bureau only to find no sign of the couple.

It is understood Liu, 31, and Ge, 25, registered at the bureau on Sunday. Someone claiming to be a bureau guard posted a picture online yesterday of the couple leaving the premises. Ge was holding a bouquet.

Jiefang Daily reported that the registration was completed on Sunday, citing an unnamed bureau employee.

A picture of Liu and Ge was posted on Liu’s microblog yesterday morning. The couple are leaning against a hurdle on a running track at the city’s Xinzhuang training base and Liu has written: “This (the hurdle) and her are my favorites.”

Born in Jinan in east China’s Shandong Province, Ge works for a drama group in the political department of the People’s Liberation Army’s Air Force. She also owns shares in a culture company based in Beijing.

A graduate of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, she has had a number of roles in TV series.

Liu’s parents told Jiefang Daily that the couple got to know each other in 2009 although Ge had been a fan since 2004, the year Liu won Olympic gold in Athens.

The couple were first introduced in 2009 at an event where Ge had asked to have her picture taken with the athlete.

They had kept in touch since then and the relationship blossomed after Liu’s dramatic exit through injury from the London Olympics in 2012. Liu’s parents said Ge had given Liu a lot of support when he was in the US for treatment. Liu told his parents that they were a couple on his return to China.

The parents revealed that when Liu and Ge went on a date to the movies they would enter the cinema separately so as not to arouse attention.

Ge thinks Liu a great person, though with a limited social circle, the hurdler’s parents told the newspaper. She was hoping to help Liu broaden his horizons, they said.

In an interview with the Xinmin Evening News, they said Ge had been making frequent trips to Shanghai to visit Liu.

Liu was only at home one day a week because of training but his room had been redecorated and the couple would be living with them temporarily, his parents said.

Liu’s father told the paper that the marriage, and any plans they had to have children, would not affect Liu’s comeback and his current training.

According to the Titan Sports newspaper, Ge is from a well-off family. Her father is the main shareholder of a large enterprise while her mother was said to have been a model.

Recent postings on Ge’s Weibo account showed that she had been learning to cook, especially Shanghai snacks, over the past few weeks.

News of the relationship and the marriage had been such a well-kept secret that Liu’s national teammate, fellow hurdler Shi Dongpeng, had no clue about the marriage before yesterday.
