Live chickens strapped down for tourists’ target practice in Wenzhou

LIVE chickens were found strapped on a board for targets for tourists to shoot at in a tourist destination in Wenzhou, according to Xinhuanet.com.

Three bows and many sharp arrows were found in a shooting stall near a chicken coop where about 50 live chickens were found.
According to the stall owner, two shots cost 10 yuan (US$1.65), and there are many tourists who have paid for shots. A tourist surnamed Chen said he had tried to shoot a chicken many times but failed.

There were more onlookers than shooters at the site.

“Shooting a live chicken is too cruel, and can be regarded as animal abuse,” said a tourist surnamed Cai.

Some citizens in Wenzhou also expressed their concerns that shooting a live chicken might increase the danger of bird flu. Some netizens said animals should be afforded some basic rights, and it was the immoral behavior of human beings that leads to the outbreak of different diseases.

Environmentalists in Wenzhou also called shooting live, strapped down chickens animal abuse. Although there are laws and regulations against abusing animals in more than 100 countries worldwide as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan, there is no such law in China’s mainland.
