Liver-miracle mother prepared for donation
A MOTHER, 55, in central China's Hubei Province has walked 10 kilometers every day for seven months, lost weight and eradicated her fatty liver so she can donate part of the organ to her son.
It was almost impossible for a patient to get rid of a fatty liver in seven months through exercise, said Tian De'an from a local hospital.
Yet Chen Yurong achieved the feat in 211 days spurred by the bid to save her son.
Chen's son, Ye Haibin, was diagnosed with hepatolenticular degeneration 18 years ago, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
The disease can be fatal over the long term as it severely damages a patient's organs and nervous system.
By the time her son was 13, Chen chose conservative treatment for him as the family could not afford a transplant.
The treatment worked well for more than a decade. Ye married and had a child but his illness worsened last year and doctors told Chen he needed a liver transplant.
Chen decided to give half her liver to her son. After her son was hospitalized, Chen was found to be suffering from fatty liver, and was told she could die if she went through with the donation.
Chen refused her husband and her daughter-in-law's offers to donate their livers.
"My husband has to be strong to support the family and my daughter-in-law still has a long life to live," Chen told the newspaper.
Ye is in hospital waiting for experts to decide whether the liver transplant can proceed - and whether his mother is a suitable donor.
And Chen? Well, she just keeps on walking.
