Loan shark and his gang put to jail
A criminal gang leader in Gaoyou, Jiangsu Province, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges of organized crimes, extortion, disturbing the social order and illegal gambling.
The man, surnamed Huang, a 34-year-old Gaoyou native, was called the "underground mayor" in the verdict read by the Gaoyou People's Court, Jinling Evening News reported.
His seven gang members were sentenced from 1 1/2 years to 12 years in prison at the same time.
From 2005, Huang gathered some former prisoners and jobless people to form an "underground kingdom" mainly practicing usury. As the gang leader, he was called "Mayor Huang" by his followers.
The gang also hired bullies to dun loan borrowers for payment and extort money from other people. Some debtors were forced to sell apartments to pay their debts with exorbitant interest rates, or leave their hometown, the newspaper said.
Huang also ran a casino and got an illegal profit of more than 800,000 yuan (US$119,940).
Gaoyou police found that from 2005 to June 2009 more than 16.8 million yuan had gone into Huang's private account. He also owned five properties, a car, a hotel and a shoe cleaning store.
The trial went on for seven months, and the indictment was 112 pages thick due to the gang's many crimes, a staff with the Gaoyu court told the newspaper.
