Local model fell but found support
Chinese internet users yesterday voiced their backing for Chinese model Ming Xi, who apologized for tripping on the catwalk of the inaugural Victoria’s Secret fashion show in China.
Xi, who was born Xi Mengyao, stumbled after stepping on the train of her flowing costume during the show in Shanghai, her hometown.
The spotlight was on participants like Xi after Victoria’s Secret chose seven models of Chinese origin — a record number — for the annual show, as the lingerie brand seeks to break into China’s growing market.
The show is broadcast in more than 190 countries.
But Xi was the only one of the 55 models in the show to suffer the occupational hazard of falling on the catwalk.
The incident quickly became one of the top-trending items on China’s Twitter-like Weibo website.
“I’m sorry to let everyone down. Thanks for everyone’s concern,” Xi, 28, said on Weibo.
“As a model for seven years, I have fallen on this road many times, but I know no matter how painful it is, I must stand and finish.
“The future road is long. I will always continue walking.”
Chinese Internet users praised Xi for getting up, straightening the elaborate floral-themed decorative frame on her back and finishing her walk.
“My heart broke watching that. But Ming is still pretty! Go girl!” said a Weibo user, one of thousands who commented.
Supermodel Karlie Kloss chimed in on Xi’s Weibo feed. “You handled that with such grace and elegance. Sometimes you trip and fall but it’s how you get back up that matters, and you got up like a champ and owned it. Love you Ming!” Kloss said.
The exhibition of bras and panties, now in its 23rd year, was recorded on Monday and would be broadcast globally next Tuesday.
Fifty-five models walked the catwalk inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena, serenaded by Harry Styles, R&B star Miguel, Tony Award-winner Leslie Odom Jr, and Chinese singer Jane Zhang. Styles sang “Only Angel” and “Kiwi.”
In a show segment titled “Goddess,” Victoria’s Secret models donned massive floor-sweeping silk wings with gold and silver sequined lingerie and plenty of bling.
The show ended with a tribute to lingerie designs based on various ethnic and native origins, with models wearing rainbow-colored feathers and beaded jewelry.
