Long arm of law put killer behind bars 15 years later

A murderer who had been hiding for 15 years in the remote Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China was caught recently, Chongqing Evening News reported today.

Deng Bing, a 53-year-old Chongqing native, shot dead a man in a conflict in 1996 and took a long journey on foot to Xinjiang which he believed was be a safe place for hiding. It took him nearly half a year to walk more than 4,000 kilometers to arrive in Aksu, a city in Xinjiang. He lost about 15 kilograms of weight on the trip.

Deng told police that he lived by begging and collecting garbage and he was nearly killed by wolves on the road.

He changed his name and worked on different jobs in Xinjiang. During the 15 years, his father died; his wife ran away and his daughter got married but he knew nothing because he dared not to contact his home.

This April, Chongqing police eventually located him and captured him with help from Xinjiang police. Though locked behind bars, Deng told the police that he felt relaxed at last.
