Loose bolts caused Metro escalator accident
A PRELIMINARY investigation showed loose screw bolts caused an escalator at a Metro station in Shenzhen, southern Guangdong Province, to suddenly slam into reverse, injuring a pregnant woman and 24 others during the morning rush hour on Tuesday.
By yesterday, 19 wounded riders, including the pregnant woman, have been discharged from hospitals after treatment for minor injuries like scrapes and bruises, Shenzhen Metro Group Co said. The remaining six are under observation in hospitals and are in stable condition, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Metro company's investigation showed some bolts on the escalator's motors got loose, causing the driving chains to slip off the wheels. A bolt was said to have been cut off. The walkway then moved downwards under the weight of some 80 riders standing on it.
But Metro authorities said more investigation will be done to confirm the cause. They didn't mention whether any quality problem was involved in the accident.
