Lost infant to 鈥榣ive on鈥 after giving life to girl
A 9-YEAR-OLD girl who was dying of chronic renal failure has been given a new lease of life after receiving two kidneys from an infant who died just two days after birth.
The baby girl was born with a severe lung infection and died from a lack of oxygen to her brain, doctors said.
Despite their loss, the girl’s parents said that by donating her kidneys it meant she would be able “stay in the world in another way.”
The infant also became China’s youngest ever organ donor.
The transplant was carried out at the 2nd Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in Hunan Province.
“Kidney transplants for young patients are challenging due to the complexity of the operation and the tiny blood vessels,” said Peng Longkai, who led the team.
The transplanted kidneys were just 4 centimeters in length, he said.
Recipient Huang Jing (not her real name) contracted kidney disease as a toddler.
“I am very happy and want to go to school,” the youngster said after the operation.
