Lottery chief faces fraud trial

THE former director of the welfare lottery center in Qingdao in east China's province of Shandong is to be put on trial accused of embezzling nearly 48 million yuan (US$7.35 million) and taking bribes of more than 9 million yuan.

Wang Zengxian, acting on behalf of the lottery center, is said to have asked for cars, furniture and cash totaling 5.9 million yuan, the Qingdao People's Procuratorate said, according to a report in yesterday's local Peninsula Metropolis Daily newspaper.

Qingdao Lottery Center is also to be charged with taking bribes.

Wang is said to have embezzled money while in charge of building offices and managing online lottery sales. He is also accused of using the lottery fund to buy a luxury yacht, invest in hotels and fund a lavish lifestyle, according to chief prosecutor Dong Yizhi.

There was an outcry when the Qingdao Lottery Center funded the luxury yacht purchase to the tune of 20 million yuan in 2005.

Wang was sacked in January last year and required by a disciplinary watchdog to explain his spending decisions.
