Lottery win is 3rd-largest ever
SOMEBODY from Henan Province on Tuesday night became the Chinese mainland's third biggest-ever lottery winner, pocketing a total of 258 million yuan (US$38.5 million).
The unidentified player from Anyang City reaped the prize after buying 50 identical "Double Color Ball" tickets issued by the China Welfare Lottery at a total cost of 100 yuan, the provincial welfare lottery center said.
The buyer chose the same numbers on each ticket, which brought his total number of stakes - each worth 5.16 million yuan - to 50. A total of 54 top prizes were awarded in Tuesday's lottery.
One of the other four winners, also from Anyang, paid 32 yuan to buy a total of 16 tickets in two different numbers. One of the tickets got the top 5.16 million yuan prize, while the other 15 tickets all hit the second prize. In total, the buyer won nearly 6.89 million yuan.
The remaining three winners were from Shanghai and Hebei and Shandong provinces.
The Shanghai buyer paid 10 yuan for five tickets at a stall in the Pudong New Area. One of the numbers hit the top prize.
Calls to the Henan welfare lottery center all went unanswered yesterday.
But it wasn't all good news for the 258 million yuan winner. When he or she picks up the money, a tax bill of about 51.6 million yuan is also awaiting.
Anyang City has become a symbol of luck to many Chinese lottery players. Around this time last year, a man created the country's lottery winning record when he hit a jackpot of almost 360 million yuan.
He had spent 176 yuan to buy 88 identical "Double Color Ball" tickets.
The second biggest-ever lottery winner went to a man identified as Shen in Shanghai's Yangpu District, who took home 259 million yuan after paying 200 yuan to buy the Double Color Ball tickets in August this year.
Most big jackpot winners have been inclined to give to charity. The 359 million yuan winner gave away 10 million. The Shanghai winner donated 10.3 million yuan to the Shanghai Citizen Mutual-Aid Foundation.
The Double Color Ball lottery is drawn three times a week. People have to guess seven numbers to win the first prize. They can choose the numbers themselves.
Proceeds from the lottery go to disaster relief and to disabled people and senior citizens, according to the national welfare lottery center.
