Loud, early morning dancing music sickens giant panda in zoo

A giant panda in a Nanjing zoo is suffering from an irregular heartbeat due to a group of noisy middle-aged women dancing in a square near the zoo every morning, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

Dozens of people gather in the public square near the Nanjing Forest Hongshan Zoo and dance to music on a stereo from 7am to 9am every day, spreading extremely loud music to the panda’s residence, the report said.

Panda Zhaoyang, who tends to like a quiet atmosphere, became irritated when the music began. The panda’s heart beat fast and breath accelerated, said the report. Some hornbills and giraffes are also disturbed by the outdoor dancing residents, said the zoo director, adding that timid giraffes had to go back to their indoor habitat minutes after they came out to catch some fresh air.

Outdoor dancing is a popular fitness and social activity among many Chinese, with groups gathering in parks and plazas to dance to everything from traditional Chinese music to the latest pop hits. The noise has drawn criticism from people living nearby in many Chinese cities.
