'Lovers' tiff fueled police abuse'

A driver in south China has claimed police detained and abused him for three months, questioning him about the blackmail of a senior official he did not know.

After his release on May 25, Yang Xiaozhong, 45, and his relatives have been visiting government agencies in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, demanding compensation, according to the China Youth Daily.

Yang said he was detained on February 22. During interrogation, he was fed only once every three to four days, deprived of sleep and forced to stand for hours. His relatives reported him missing to police, fearing he had been abducted by gangsters.

Yang said he was ordered to sign documents confessing to a plot to blackmail and kill Tan Feng, Party secretary of Yangshuo County, whom Yang said he did not know.

He said he later realized there was a link by way of an actress who had been intimate with Tan before the two broke up. Yang is convinced his detention is related to this lovers' tiff.

Yangshuo Public Security Bureau declined to comment.
