AT least 136 children and teachers in a kindergarten in Xi'an, capital of Shanxi Province suffered food poisoning yesterday and were sent to hospital for treatment, Huashang News reported today.

Beibeile Kindergarten students and teachers felt sick after eating lunch in the canteen. Local authorities said the symptom was not life-threatening. Local police found the kindergarten was not legally registered and had no food hygiene certificate. The kindergarten principal and a chef have been detained for questioning.

Many children said they felt headache and dry mouth, then started to vomit. They had noodles for lunch. Initial food test showed it was nitrite poisoning, the report said.

Nitrite looks and tastes like salt, but it is poisonous. Keeping cooked vegetables in high temperature can yield nitrite. Symptoms include headache, diarrhea and purple complexion. Three grams of nitrite may cause death.

Local authorities said Beibeile Kindergarten was not licensed. Many parents sent their children here because it was cheap and close to home. They have shut down the kindergarten after the poisoning incident.
