Ma Runs For KMT Chairman

TAIWAN leader Ma Ying-jeou announced yesterday afternoon he would run for chairman of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party.

Ma, who served as the party's chairman from August 2005 to February 2007, said he was running not to gain more power, but to better fulfil his responsibilities.

He said the financial crisis has sent Taiwan into recession, and he must "take full responsibility" to save the island's economy.

KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung said he would not run for KMT chairman after he learned of Ma's intention to run. The KMT will elect a new chairman on July 26.
