Macau aims for growth, green balance

THE Macau government said yesterday it is striving for a balance between environmental conservation and economic development as it works to turn Macau into a green, low-carbon city.

Chui Sai On, chief executive of Macao SAR, made the remarks at the opening of the 2016 Macau International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition, themed “Green Economy — Opportunities for Waste Management,” which will last for 3 days.

Environmental protection is one major policy which is written in the administrative report of Macau. In order to enhance waste management, the SAR government has been taking measures, including implementing the “Macau Solid Waste Resource Management Plan” and promoting “reduce waste at source, separation for recycling” policy, said Chui.

Such measures are in line with the goal of transforming Macau into a city with more favorable conditions for living, tourism, business, travel and recreation, said Chui, adding that the government will step up efforts to support growth of local green industries.

The administration is making great efforts to promote industrial integration, economic development and closer regional cooperation amid the ongoing adjustment in Macau’s gaming industry, Chui said, noting that one of the goals for Macau’s sustainable development is to achieve significant performance in environmental protection.

The MIECF is an annual event that has been held since 2008.
