Macau鈥檚 the place for a feast of music
THE 31st Macau International Music Festival from September 29 to October 30 will offer 20 performances by top musicians, the region’s cultural department said yesterday.
This year’s festival will take Rising Stars as theme and feature musicians from Italy, South Africa, Germany, Russia, the United States, Austria, Portugal, South Korea, the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Umberto Giordano, the festival will kick off with Teatro Regio di Torino’s production of Girodano’s four-act opera “Andrea Chenier,” which tells the story of the love between patriotic poet Chenier and noblewoman Maddalena during the French Revolution.
Conductor Andris Nelsons will lead the internationally renowned Vienna Philharmonic in its interpretation of Beethoven, Strauss and Wagner classics in the closing concerts.
The festival has invited a number of international rising stars, including the Novus String Quartet, one of South Korea’s leading chamber groups, which will present works by composers including Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Ravel.
Acclaimed conductor Paavo Jarvi and Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will bring a soul-stirring evening dedicated to Beethoven. Portugal’s Guimaraes String Quartet will take the audience on a journey through the periods of classicism, romanticism and up to the 20th century. South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir will showcase the beauty of pure voices.
