Mad man's hacking rampage leaves 1 dead, 11 injured

A mad man wielding knives in a downtown street in Yiwu, a city in eastern Zhejiang Province, killed one passer-by and injured 11 others this morning.

The 24-year-old suspect surnamed Li from Jiangxi Province was subdued by police and his motivation is still under investigation.

Witnesses said Li, wearing white gloves and holding three fruit knives in his left hand and one fruit knife in his right hand, hacked at anyone he met in the city's bustling Xianshan Road during the morning rush hour.

Li was overpowered by arriving police, but a 28-year-old man surnamed Zeng, also from Jiangxi Province, was pronounced dead upon arriving at a nearby hospital due to heavy bleeding.

The 11 wounded were all sent to the hospital. Four received surgeries and are in stable condition, Yiwu police said.

According to the police, Li visited a psychiatric hospital last year for schizophrenia.

Yiwu is famous for its enormous commodities trading center. A large number of its migrant workers come from the adjacent Jiangxi Province.
