Mafia boss, 26 associates imprisoned
A GUANGZHOU court has sentenced 27 members of a mafia-style gang to prison terms of up to 20 years for a slew of crimes.
Hu Weixing, the gang’s leader and chairman of a real estate developer, was on Thursday given 20 years, while his associates received terms ranging from 19 months to 19 years at the Intermediate People’s Court in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province.
The crime gang, which included members of Hu’s family, was found guilty on multiple charges, including illegal land grabs, running gambling dens and physical assault dating back to 2004.
The court heard that in July 2004, Hu paid three people to attack Hu Yuhui with knives after the victim reported his criminal activities to the authorities.
It also heard how in March 2010, several men paid by Hu poured sulfuric acid over a judge surnamed Ke, who had earlier ruled against Hu in a lawsuit. The judge was slightly injured in the attack.
Prosecutors also said the gang earned 48 million yuan (US$7.7 million) in 2011-12 from its illegal casino operations.
Aside from the convictions, the court ruled that the trial of four gang members should be terminated as the statute of limitations on their crimes had expired.
Three others were exempted from penalties as their criminal activities were deemed to be minor, the court heard.
