Maiden voyage for Sansha鈥檚 new patrol boat
A newly commissioned vessel in China’s southernmost city of Sansha has completed its first patrol in waters around the Zhongsha Islands.
The No. 1 Law Enforcement Ship left Yongxing Island on Sunday and arrived in Wenchang, Hainan Province, yesterday afternoon after a 1,222 kilometer trip.
During its patrol, the vessel drove away boats in violation of a fishing ban around the islands, said senior law enforcement officer Liu Kun. The ban that began on May 16 in the South China Sea is due to end on August 1.
City officials, including Xiao Jie, the city’s mayor and Party chief, took part in the patrol.
A survey of fishery resources around the Zhongsha Islands was also conducted by provincial maritime experts during the patrol.
The patrol ship was delivered and commissioned on May 20.
The 2,600-ton vessel can reach speeds of 22 nautical miles per hour and is capable of sailing 6,000 nautical miles (11,112 kilometers), meaning it can carry out patrols in the waters around the Nansha Islands.
Sansha, on Yongxing, one of the Xisha islands, was officially established in 2012 to administer the Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha island groups and their surrounding waters in the South China Sea.
