Mainland H1N1 toll rises to 11

THE Chinese mainland reported three more deaths from swine flu yesterday, bringing the fatality toll from the disease to 11.

A 34-month-old boy from Qingtongxia City in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region died late Wednesday in the regional capital Yinchuan. Test results confirmed yesterday he was infected with the H1N1 virus.

As of 3pm yesterday, Ningxia had reported 398 cases of the disease, with 179 victims already recovered.

The other two deaths involved two teenagers, one from north China's Hebei Province and the other from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest.

A 14-year-old student surnamed Guo, from Fuyun County in Xinjiang's Altay Prefecture, was treated at local clinics for fever on October 30. He was transferred to the Fuyun People's Hospital on Tuesday, but died later, the regional health department said.

Tests on Wednesday showed Guo died of swine flu, viral pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, the department said.

In Hebei Province a senior high school student died on October 29, local officials said. As of Wednesday, the province had reported 1,042 cases of the disease, with 736 recoveries.

Eight swine flu deaths were reported earlier in Beijing, Tibet, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Heilongjiang, Guangxi, Hunan and Zhejiang, the Ministry of Health said.
