Mainland hails meeting with KMT

A MEETING between leaders of the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang party will be significant for safeguarding the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, a Chinese mainland spokesman said yesterday.
An Fengshan, of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, was speaking about the upcoming visit of Hung Hsiu-chu, leader of the KMT in Taiwan.
Hung is due to lead a delegation to the mainland from Sunday to November 3.
An said interaction between the two parties and efforts to consolidate common political ground would have a positive impact on peace and stability across the Strait.
In 2005, when cross-Strait ties were at a critical juncture, the heads of the two parties held a “historic meeting” confirming their adherence to the 1992 Consensus, which affirms the one-China principle and opposes Taiwan independence.
An said the agreement to regularly communicate made at that meeting pointed to a “bright road” for cross-Strait ties. Since then, the two parties had maintained communication, which contributed to peaceful relations, he said.
An said there had been a series of achievements since 2008, made possible because the two sides had established a common political ground.
Asked for comment on a meeting between Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen and James Moriarty, the new chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, An urged the United States to honor its commitment to the one China policy.
At their meeting, Tsai expressed her hope that the US would support Taiwan’s participation in international affairs and Moriarty had said that the US was willing to see Taiwan play a bigger role in the region.
An said the mainland had made clear its attitude toward Taiwan’s participation in international activities.
In response to earlier news about Taiwan’s plans to set up early warning radar on Taiping Island in the South China Sea and the possibility of sharing information with the US, An said the mainland had reiterated its stance on the South China Sea issue many times and warned that Taiwan’s confrontation against the mainland by relying on foreign forces would be harmful for both sides.
