Mainland passengers transiting Taiwan
Chinese mainland passengers are now able to transit Taiwan and fly to a third destination in a step toward greater transport links between both sides of the strait that came into effect yesterday.
The plan had been under discussion for years and the mainland announced early last month that it would begin the transit program from three trial cities, Nanchang, Kunming and Chongqing.
Two mainland passengers transited Taiwan yesterday on a flight from Nanchang before flying on to Bangkok, according to an official with the island’s Straits Exchange Foundation, which is in charge of the program.
Flights from Kunming and Chongqing were due to transit later in the day, the official said.
Deepens exchanges
Allowing Chinese passengers flying from the mainland to transit Taiwan benefits the development of the civil aviation industry and deepens exchanges between Taiwan and the mainland, the foundation said in a statement.
China’s announcement of the transit trial came just before national elections in Taiwan swept in the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, which is seen as less friendly toward Beijing.
The transit passengers will not be able to leave the airport and must have valid onward travel documents, according to the transit regulations.
