Mainland tourist beaten up and died in shopping dispute with tour guides at HK jewelry store
A Chinese mainland tourist to Hong Kong died Tuesday after he was allegedly beaten up unconscious for implication in a shopping dispute at an jeweler’s, according to local media.
It occurred on Monday morning when a mainland tour group of about 20 was led to a jewelry shop in Hung Hom, Kowloon, for shopping, it reported.
A group member surnamed Miao, 54, and his female colleague surnamed Zhang, 53, didn't make purchase and smoke cigarettes near the shop gate. The leader of the tour group, surnamed Deng, 32, talked to them, it reported.
Deng and Zhang quarreled and fought, in which Deng was slapped on her face. Miao tried to mediate. Suddenly several men appeared, dragging Miao and Zhang outsides the shop, it reported.
A female group member said Miao was beaten to bleed in mouth and lost unconscious later. The attackers fled at the scene. Miao was rushed to the hospital while Zhang and Deng were detained, each with injuries on hand and face, it reported.
She said: “Our tour guide has warned us that if we didn't buy anything, our traffic tickets would be torn. We have been forced to stay in the shop from 8 to 12am and we weren’t let go.” Her words were backed up by a male tour group member who said: “Yes. No purchase cause beats.”
Miao, from northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, was announced dead at hospital on Tuesday morning. And police have classified the case as manslaughter, it reported.
Two men, a 44-year-old Hong Kong native and a 32-year-old mainland native, have been held by police for connection to the attack, it reported.
The state tourism watchdog said today they were paying close attention to this incident and hoped the Hong Kong local authorities would complete an investigation soon to find out what really took place and carry out effective measures to protect rights of mainland tourists to Hong Kong.
