Mainland tourists still wary of Taiwan
TAIWAN saw substantially fewer visitors from the Chinese mainland last month, official data showed this week.
The number of mainland visitors fell 44.3 percent in October from a year ago after September’s 37 percent decline.
However, the sharp fall in numbers did not alter the fact that the Chinese mainland remains Taiwan’s largest source of inbound visitors.
Mainland visitors are said to be wary of traveling to the island following a fatal bus fire near Taipei in July, which killed 24 tourists from the mainland.
Business owners who rely on tourism say they are struggling to make ends meet as the mainland visitors were a major source of their income.
The island’s transport authority also said that the occupancy rate of cross-Strait flights had fallen to its lowest level since April last year because of the fall in the number of mainland tourists.
