Major expressways shut as north hit by fresh snowfall
AS a new round of snowstorm hit north China, major expressways were closed to vehicular traffic yesterday.
In northeast China, the Public Security Department of Jilin Province stopped coaches, trucks and vehicles loaded with chemicals and other dangerous articles from using the expressways as early as 9am yesterday.
Sections of the Shenji Expressway, linking Shenyang City in neighboring Liaoning Province with Jilin City in Jilin Province, have also been hit.
The Jilin provincial meteorological observatory issued a blue warning on Thursday afternoon for further snowstorms.
China has a four-color-coded warning system for its weather forecast, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
In north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, heavy snowfall has forced the closure of sections of 16 expressways, including the Jingzang Expressway, which links Beijing and Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
The weather also led to the cancellation of all bus services in Tongliao City in the region. In Chifeng City, public transport has been on a standstill for seventh straight day.
It is the third snowfall to hit Inner Mongolia this month.
By Thursday, the first two snowstorms had affected around 300,000 people in Inner Mongolia, according to the local government.
The storms have resulted in the death of one person, affected over 6,000 animals and damaged 9,941 hectares of crops.
It has led to a total direct economic loss of 370 million yuan (US$59 million).
Local meteorological authorities in Inner Mongolia said the weather will not clear until Wednesday.
In Liaoning Province, authorities expect traffic to resume on the closed expressways by this morning.
