Major online seller of fake Botox busted
A WEBSITE that sold dozens of brands of cheap counterfeit cosmetic injections has been busted by authorities in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The Guilin-based online store sold a total of 70 brands of fake products to beauty parlors, plastic surgery hospitals, private surgeons and individual beauty seekers, local drug watchdog and police said.
The top-selling products were Botox and hyaluronic acid injections, well-known for their non-surgical effects on anti-aging, wrinkle-smoothing and slimming, and both were sold at prices nearly dozens of times lower than their market prices, China Central Television has reported.
The website called "Pretty for you" claimed it was the most comprehensive and biggest online cosmetic and medical products seller across the nation, however, it never sold any qualified products since it was set up in 2010.
It bought substandard cosmetic injections from factories in provinces of Shandong, Zhejiang and Guangdong at extremely low prices, said the founder of the website surnamed Chen.
The Shandong Guanglong Biochemical Co Ltd sold a dose of fake hyaluronic acid to Chen's website at merely 80 to 100 yuan (US$12.624), and the website doubled the price and sold the products to local medical institutions, which charged individual beauty seekers 5,000 yuan for each product, the program said.
"These beauty parlors and hospitals knew the products are fakes," Chen said.
Serious side effects from the fake Botox injection were frequently reported and some individuals even died of excessive doses, the report said.
