Man, 17, gets suspended jail term for sex with under-aged runaway girlfriend
A 17-YEAR-OLD boy received a suspended jail term of 14 months for the statutory rape of his 13-year-old runaway girlfriend, who was living with him at his family’s home in south China’s Guangdong Province, the New Express Daily reported today.
Sex with girls under the age of 14 is considered rape under Chinese law, regardless of whether there is evidence of force, because such minors are not considered old enough to give consent.
The 17-year-old’s suspension period is one and a half years, according to the verdict of a local court in Foshan city of Guangdong Province.
The teenage boy identified as Zhou Liang was arrested at his house on September 9, 2013. That’s when the 13-year-old girl, who had been away from her home two months, was found by her family.
Zhou had met his girlfriend during the summer and they had sex, the report said.
The girl was permitted to live at Zhou’s house after she said she did not want to return home.
Zhou’s mother said the family all liked her son’s girlfriend, and they tried to persuade the girl to go back home. The girl worried about her mother being against the relationship, so she chose to stay with Zhou, the report said.
