Man, 70, dies in housing brawl, officials punished

FOUR grassroots officials in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province have been removed or suspended after a 70-year-old villager was beaten to death on Wednesday in a brawl over housing demolition, local officials said yesterday.

Dismissed from their positions were Liu Hongyan, head of the Zhaodong Town in Zhaodong City; Sheng Zhenshan, deputy chief of the city's urban management office; and Jiang Xingting, Party chief of Dongyue Village. Ma Mingzhe, Liu's deputy, was suspended.

A group of demolition workers, led by government officials at around 9am on Wednesday, quarreled with local villagers and then started a fight after villagers refused to remove banners demanding "harmonious demolition," Xinhua news agency reported.

Witnesses told the China News Service that 70-year-old Duan Guangfa was injured during the skirmish and died at the hospital that afternoon.

More than 10 other villagers were also injured, but none seriously, Xinhua reported.

Since his house has a good location, Duan was among some villagers who said the relocation compensation was too low and were reluctant to move. Only 30 of the 100 households have signed the relocation agreement with the government, the China News Service said.

Five people suspected of inflicting the injuries have been detained but their identities have not been released, the China News Service reported.

Duan's body was taken to a local funeral parlor. It is not known whether his family will receive compensation pending the ongoing investigation.
