Man, 70, gets 4 years in ill wife’s mercy killing

A 70-YEAR-OLD man who helped his bed-ridden wife to end her life was sentenced to four years for intentional homicide by a court in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei Province.

However, a judge ruled that considering the circumstances, he can serve his term outside of prison.

Wang Weiguo’s wife Ye Aizhen, 67, was diagnosed with colon cancer in March but was unable to have surgery because of her weak heart. After she was sent home, her condition quickly worsened, Changjiang Daily reported today.

Overwhelmed by pain, it was hard for her to sleep or eat. The couple has three sons were working in other cities, so only Wang, suffering himself from a serious case of joint necrosis and having lost sight in one eye, was available to care for her, the report said.

Ye saw her sickness as a heavy burden for the family and begged Wang to drown her, the newspaper said. “Send me to the river. You have to listen to me this time,” Ye said, as Wang recalled.

On April 14, Wang took Ye, along with quilts and her clothes, to the river. Fishers saw what was happening and called police. Ye was ruled to have drowned.

Wang stood trial on June 3. Wang insisted that he just helped Ye to resolve her plight by committing suicide.

Judge Ding Xinhong said Chinese law bans mercy killing or helping others to die. But considering he killed Ye at her request and given her disability, he was allowed to serve his term outside of prison, Ding added.

The judge did not indicate whether Wang would serve his term at home, at a hospital or in some other setting.
