Man abandons sick baby in dustbin
POLICE in central China's Hubei Province have detained a 30-something man who had allegedly abandoned his ill newborn son in a dustbin. A cleaner dumped burning charcoal on him before realizing the boy was alive, today's Xinmin Evening News reported.
The man surnamed Fan surrendered to police in Hubei's Xiaogan City on Monday after reading media reports about an abandoned boy. DNA confirmed he was the father, the report said.
Fan said his son was born with a congenital illness affecting his digestion on February 22 at Xiaochang County People's Hospital. He took the boy to the provincial capital Wuhan to seek treatment, but had to drop the rescue attempt because doctors there said the cost was too high.
After returning to Xiaochang, the baby was breathing weakly so Fan said he abandoned him at a roadside dustbin.
He had surgery to repair his deformity on March 2. The baby has now recovered and can drink milk, according to doctor Yu Lei.
