Man accuses doctors in disappearance of kidney

HEALTH authority in Yueyang City of Hunan Province said they are investigating a case in which a young man accused hospital doctors of improperly removing his normal kidney during an unrelated surgery, a local newspaper reported.
Liu Yong, 25, a Hunan native, said he had surgery at Xiangyue Hospital of Yueyang City to remove his spleen last year after he was found to have serious schistosomiasis, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.
But last month, Liu was shocked to hear from doctors during a health check that his left kidney was missing.
Liu said he had a health check at the Yueyang No.1 People's Hospital before the splenectomy last year. The check showed he had two normal kidneys as well as his schistosomiasis.
Liu and his family told the newspaper they didn't know whether the doctors had stolen his kidney when removing his spleen or had damaged his left kidney during the surgery so they had to remove it secretly.
A hospital doctor, Chen Xuejin, however, denied the accusation and argued that they found Liu had congenital defects that his left kidney unable to function normally.
Chen said Liu's first health check report, which shows two normal kidneys, was the error of a doctor who probably didn't do his work carefully.
In response, Peng Kai with the Yueyang No.1 People's Hospital, who was in charge of Liu's health check, insisted the report was accurate as he has seen clearly two kidneys.
Health authorities of Yueyang City told the newspaper that they are still investigating and they would do further health checks on Liu.
