Man admits to killing doctor in nose op row

A MAN pleaded guilty yesterday to stabbing a doctor to death and injuring two others in eastern Zhejiang Province, because he was unhappy with an operation on his nose.

Lian Enqing, 34, denied having mental health problems at Taizhou City Intermediate People’s Court, saying he took complete responsibility for his actions, China News Service reported.

Lian’s sister, Lian Chao, confirmed reports that her brother had been treated for mental problems at a Shanghai hospital for two months last summer.

She said he hadn’t always taken his medication after being discharged.

Prosecutors said Lian had difficulty breathing through his nose and underwent a minor nasal operation in the Wenling No.1 People’s Hospital last March.

He was unhappy with the results and had further checks in several hospitals. All the tests showed that his nose was fine, the court heard.

But Lian’s family said he became irritable and often smashed up things.

On October 25, Lian returned to the hospital, carrying a knife and hammer.

Unable to find the doctor responsible for his operation, Lian attacked Wang Yunjie, head of the ear, nose and throat department.

Wang was stabbed to death and two other doctors were injured. One suffered serious chest wounds, while the other sustained light injuries.

Lian was eventually subdued by hospital security staff.

Taizhou City Intermediate People’s Court didn’t announce a verdict yesterday.
