Man allegedly tortured by infamous cop jailed
A man who accused a controversial police officer of torturing him to extort a confession was again convicted of robbery and sentenced to 13 years behind bars after the case was retried in a northern China city.
Wang Zhao claimed he was framed and beaten up by Li Gang, a police chief who made headlines nationwide when his son tried to exploit his father's rank after causing a fatal accident.
But Beishi District People's Court in Baoding City, Hebei Province, found Wang had robbed 13,000 yuan, a cell phone and jewelry from a woman in her an apartment in Baoding in August 2006, China News Service reported today.
The jail term handed to Wang was the same as the one given in December 2007, when the case was first heard.
The Higher People's Court of Hebei Province revoked the original judgment and remanded the case to Beishi District People's Court last November after errors have been found in the evidence.
The procurator admitted there were 36 mistakes in the evidence in the original court hearing. But the mistakes didn't mean that Wang was innocent, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
