Man arrested after Kunming boy poisoned with mercury
A man suspected of poisoning a 5-year-old boy with mercury has been arrested in Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province, the Beijing News reported.
Although the boy has returned to Kunming and is back at school, his condition looked dire back in March, when his father took him to Beijing to see doctors, the report said. The boy had lost 3 kilograms quickly, ran a fever for a week and had two lumps on his buttocks.
His father squeezed the lumps, which oozed a silver liquid. A Beijing hospital found the mercury level in the boy’s blood was 200 times the standard level while it was more than 10,000 times higher than normal in his urine, the report said.
The boy had surgery and was released from the Beijing hospital in May.
Details about the suspect and motive were not released because the case involves a minor, the report added.
