Man arrested for spreading rumors

CHINESE authorities have arrested a man who allegedly spread rumors about people in Beijing jumping off buildings in response to a stock market crash, China Central Television reported yesterday.

The 29-year-old, surnamed Tian, was detained for “disorderly behavior,” CCTV said.

Tian, a project manager with a technology company based in the capital, posted the information along with video clips and screenshots on Friday. The post went viral and provoked emotional responses among stock investors who had suffered losses.

He allegedly wrote that “there are people, because of the stock market crash, who have jumped off buildings in Beijing’s Financial Street,” referring to a commercial development that houses many financial institutions.

Police said the video was of a man who jumped to his death from a building in east China’s Jiangsu Province on Friday morning. Local police are still investigating the case.
