Man arrested over tributes to a killer
A MAN was arrested in Taiwan yesterday in connection with the setting up of multiple Facebook pages dedicated to a man who carried out a deadly subway train stabbing spree.
The man, a college student identified only by his surname Yen, was arrested during a raid in New Taipei City, police said.
Last month, 21-year-old Cheng Chieh attacked passengers on a subway train in the city, killing four and wounding two dozen others.
Yen is said to have begun a Facebook group called “Cheng Chieh fans group” on May 21, just hours after the attack.
The page was pulled down after web users alerted Facebook but Yen is alleged to have put a further two pages up on the social networking site.
“The suspect has admitted to his wrong-doing and told us that he regrets what he has done,” Chiu Chen-ti, an officer from a police unit tasked with computing crimes, said.
“The suspect claimed he did this only for fun, but what he did has fuelled the public’s fear over the stabbing spree,” Chiu said. Yen faces up to two years in prison if convicted of public order offenses.
