Man avenges road patrols, burns one to death

A man was arrested yesterday for setting fire to a traffic police office, killing one police assistant and injuring another.

The suspect surnamed Li was caught at the scene in Shangli County, Jiangxi Province, yesterday morning.

He allegedly poured a bottle of gasoline on the office and inflamed it, China News Service reported today.

Tan Ping, a 35-year-old police assistant, was burnt to death while his colleague Luo Weilong, 39, was severely burnt.

The Shangli County government said in a statement that Li had a grudge against local traffic police because he was dissatisfied with their handling of a road accident in which his wife was hurt when his three-wheel motorbike clashed with a truck. The police ruled that Li was mainly responsibile for the accident.

Though the case was solved after the truck driver gave the couple 1,000 yuan (US$147.67), Li regretted after taking the money and went back to the police office asking for more compensation. The officers turned him away and days later Li took his revenge.
