Man beaten over molestation
A DRUNKEN British man who was beaten by passers-by when seen molesting a woman near a busy road in Beijing on Tuesday night has been detained, Beijing police said yesterday.
Online video footage showed the man attempting to remove the panties of a young woman who was lying on the edge of a planted area along the street and cried for help.
The woman shouted, "No! No! I didn't know him," when a Chinese passer-by came to check what was happening. After a brief conversation, the passer-by suddenly started to hit the British man and cursed at him, saying, "Too rowdy! You bastard!"
As a crowd gathered, the British man lay motionless, his shirt torn, in the middle of the road near a Sogo department store.
Another Chinese passer-by attacked the man, shouting, "How dare you violate our Chinese girls!"
Someone blocked the enraged passer-by and pulled him away in order to prevent further injury to the British man.
Minutes later, a police car came up and took the drunken man to a police station. Beijing police said he had a tourist visa but they didn't reveal his identity.
The footage has become a hot topic on Weibo.
Pictures of the same British man making indecent gestures on a subway train also were circulated online.
Many commenters online asked the police not to punish the passers-by who beat the British man. Beijing police didn't disclose whether they were taken into custody or may face any other punishment.
